make levees not war.

that was the best quote the entire time.  it was on a tshirt.

I am also fond of "pop this" on the back of a guy's collar.

Or "Otto, it would take ten people to hug that tree!" said by yours truly at Oak Alley.

I am also amazed at the number of times people assumed/asked when/wondered if Otto and I were married.  I think it is in the neighborhood of ten.  Four of whom were total strangers. Hmm.

I'll post pictures later, gaters.

Oh, and I think I've come to a nice little conclusion.  I'm tired of trying to impress people, or at least caring so much what they think.  I mean, sure, you want to impress your boss or your S.O.'s parents or that committee who's deciding whether to give you an award/job/scholarship/freebie on your speeding ticket.  But I'm tired of trying to impress other people.  I like the ones who like me for me.  :)

See, I used to think I needed to get my PhD or whatever to prove that I could.  That I was capable of doing so.  Show I am competent.  But you know what?  If I wanted to, I could be a dentist.  Or a surgeon.  Or a librarian.  Or a teacher.  Or a therapist.  Or a chemist.  Or an accountant.  Or a lawyer.  Or a professional thumb-wrestler. Anything that you can do by virtue of determination and schooling.  And I know that you can't, for instance, teach someone how to have the heart for creating incredible art or the ear to play the harp or the skillz to dunk the basketball.  But you can tell them the basics.  And I would guess that about 90% of vocations have a lot more to do with skill sets and stick-to-it-ive-ness than innate abilities.  But I digress.

Anyhow, I'm now thinking about getting my MBA.  Or doing something else entirely.  I admit I like the "wows" and "really"-s and "ooh!"-s I get when I tell people I'm a Chemical Engineer.  But you know what?  I'm not liking it right now.  Not at all.  My favorite subject in the universe has now become my worst enemy (undergrad thermo v. grad thermo), and I don't want to venture into the most lucrative aspect of ChE (petrol) and I don't like the caste systems that seem to be in place.  And I don't give a damn if I don't get the wow-really-ooh-s anymore.  I'll just tell them to myself.  :) Right, anyhow, <insert distracting and cheering-up prestidigitation here>, back to happier thoughts.

Like the pink hurricanes, oak trees, mint julips, wedding gowns, jambalaya, high heels, spanish moss, funny little 4 inch circles on the New Orleans streets due to a termite investigation some years ago, cafe du monde beignets and cafe au laits, boutiques on chartres street, fancy dresses, double-windors and four-in-hands, stretch navigators, ariel's mimi and big daddy (with mimi in her vintage and incredibly stylish vintage dresses with high heels and a real valentino purse with pink crystals), flocking to the outside heaters in Pat O's courtyard, open bars with heavy-handed tenders, discussing the subtle-yet-important differences between the pronunciation of carrie and kerry, per the australian named damien, debates about bombay v. tanqueray ten (with tonic and lime), the death-at-a-wedding-banquet picture by our table at the wedding dinner, swing dancing with otto, audrey graciously laughing off having champange punch spilled down her back, being seated at table eleven (on purpose!), shopping with the girls, taking pictures, not having to decide what to wear since it was all planned out, shrimp cocktail, the huppa and saying mazel tov, spilling my own drink four times because i'm clumsy as all get out, fleur de lis, jackson square, pirate's alley, mini beef wellingtons, calling them chriel instead of chris and ariel, the bellmen's outfits at the royal sonesta, their incredible wedding vows and jewish marriage contract, pralines, ring pops and nawlins music, which is kicking, if I do say so myself.

it was nice to have so many people thank us for coming and bringing our business to new orleans.  it's a vacation you can feel good about!

more to come. only bummers of the weekend, really, were sore feet and that my face soap exploded in my suitcase on the way there.

disco stu

should have taken a disco nap!

st patty's day

you know, it's just not *celebrating* st patty's day if you don't play pool against a random dude with a mohawk. his name was eric. a friend-of-a-friend-of-otto's/mine was my teammate--craig. it was quite fun. I made mohawk-guy and his girlfriend amanda move like seventeen times while I was playing against craig and his wife (and my teammate, brian was suuuper drunk and kept grabbing my ass, which is still bruised by the way). So, one of the time I made them move I asked if they wanted to play the next game. PS, this is post-shot when I was watching it go in! :)

we had oodles of fun. craig and I won two of the three games, and lost one of them because he put in the eight ball by mistake. i've found i'm either very confident or very hesitant on shots. but it was fun to tell people that i'd been playing pool on and off since i was eight. yay for my granddad!

we also ordered mini-cheeseburgers around 1am.

and then dan, johnny, otto and i went to penny lane. cute hat, huh? yeah, otto found htat on the bar or got it from the bartender or something.

we came home and otto and dan passed out on the couch. cory and i were pretty much sober, but those two were out like a light.

and these are some pretty pics i took in dan and cory's front yard. it's their daffodils and bradford pears. soooo pretty!

ooh, and I met the most hardcore infant ever. her name was maggie, and her mom took her out to the street fair in downtown richmond on saturday. maggie is just barely a month old, but she was having a great time napping with the background noise of half-drunk people, a band 500 ft away and lots of talking. her stroller closed over her, but when we'd peek in she looked like she was blissfully sleeping. and sooooo cute and tiny.

there was one bummer though. no green beer. an. knee. where. we were sad.

acquisitions

before i begin, a few things. first of all, remove your hand from that mouse and make an oval/circle with your pointer fingers and your thumbs using both hands. remember that size. k? k. now just using one hand put you thumb and finger together making the "OK" sign. remember that size too.

things I've acquired in the past few days...

~two shower curtains and twelve yards of ribbons to make curtains
~two curtain rods
~a fun picture of gobi

~my ben folds tickets, which I'm selling today!
~two panels of super cute curtains from target for downstairs
~my franz ferdinand and death cab for cutie tickets, which I'm keeping!
~a bruise on my ass the size of that large oval/circle from earlier
~a new photo album from creative memories
~a cute throw pillow

~a bruise on the inside of each of my elbows, the size of the smaller circle/oval
~a book called how to peel a peach
~a ticket stub from failure to launch (quite funny and cute, but you have to suspend reality a little.)
~$$$ for my TV
~a new pot for my money tree
~new recipes from everydayfoodmag.com
~sprouts from my coleus, shasta daisies, wildflowers and basil
~cute pink sunglasses

wait, what's that? the bruises? yeah, I TOTALLY fell down the stairs on Friday. like thumpthumpthumpthumpthump. They were narrow wooden stairs and I'd had a few beers. And I slipped. I hit my elbows and my ass. When the bruise first developed you could actually see a line across for each stair I hit. It was so so so embarrasing. No pun intended.

Craigslist is totally a seller's market.

And I'm sooooo excited about St Patty's day! I'll have to look for four leaf clovers tomorrow. Incase you didn't know, if they're there to find, I find 'em. Seriously. Used to freak the hell out of my friends and family when I'd walk into te house with 8 or 10 of 25 of 'em. I still have quite a few.

happy day between two holidays.

hooray for 'nay!

happiest birthday to you, m'dear.

i had a dream last night...

but it did NOT fit me like a glove.
truth be told it was a pretty strange dream.
this one's for all you edison-ites out there.
so, I'm in the prefab at EMS, and I'm there with Jonathan Tanner and Melissa Hyatt and I'm not sure who else. Except we're all roughly the age we are now, though everything is futuristic. We're still in those damn wooden desks, but the chalkboard is a touchscreen and Sterling walks in and tells us to google it (what I don't know) and pulls out this thing that looks like a combination of a telescope, an umbrella and one of those extend-your-reach grabber thingies, with a little screen on the front that folds out and shows us the answer. It's about a eight inches long, this thing is. Apparently it's pretty common, and you can talk to it and it looks stuff up. I dunno.
And we're in Mrs. Butt's class (poor woman, by the way. her name was anita. as in "i need a butt" s. and her husband's name was don. they got all clever-ee and named their daughter donita. as in "don't need a butt" s. she was mean and difficult and kind of scary, this teacher was). Mrs. Butts hasn't aged a day, she's just become meaner. And she tells us to study or we'll never get in. To what, I don't know.
This prefab room opens up into this HUGE common area, and the four of us go sit out there. We see Eddie and Whitney Flinchum and Katie Vesely and some other people a few tables down, but don't talk to them because we have to study. There was something about our Biokinetics test (is that even a thing?) being moved to Friday instead of the following Monday, and we had four tests already that day, so we were freaked. And it was Thursday. Yikes.
So, we go to take the tests the next day after studying all night, and all we do is put our hand up to a touch screen and leave the room. The screen checked our heads to see if we knew it or not. I'm not sure who all passed. The end.

happy pi day!

friday!!!

last night...

hazel was all about the beer box.

as was gobi.

but they are still cute as can be!

also, hazel has a new nickname. it's shiva. google it.

damn cat made a mess of the basil, dill and parsley seedlings otto's mom gave us. but have no fear--I think I saved them! and she tried to eat everything last night when i was planting my seeds into dixie cups. did you know that some types of cactus take 56 days to germinate? crazy stuff.

today I leave work at 1pm. mmm mmm mmm I love leaving work early. we're going to go watch the state game at otto's old professor's house. hooray for beer before 3pm. and otto's guacamole, which is de-lic-ious!

Oh, and GO PACK!

25

well, I thought this was funny. um, and sad. so I'm sharing.

25 SIGNS YOU HAVE GROWN UP

1. Your houseplants are alive, and you can't smoke any of them.
2. Having sex in a twin bed is out of the question.
3. You keep more food than beer in the fridge.
4. 6:00 AM is when you get up, not when you go to bed.
5. You hear your favorite song in an elevator.
6. You watch the Weather Channel.
7. Your friends marry and divorce instead of "hook up" and "break up."
8. You go from 130 days of vacation time to 14.
9. Jeans and a sweater no longer qualify as "dressed up."
10. You're the one calling the police because those %&@.. kids next door won't turn down the stereo.
11. Older relatives feel comfortable telling sex jokes around you.
12. You don't know what time Taco Bell closes anymore.
13. Your car insurance goes down and your car payments go up.
14. You feed your dog Science Diet instead of McDonald's leftovers.
15. Sleeping on the couch makes your back hurt.
16. You take naps.
17. Dinner and a movie is the whole date instead of the beginning of one.
18. Eating a basket of chicken wings at 3 AM would severely upset, rather than settle, your stomach.
19. You go to the drug store for ibuprofen and antacid, not condoms and pregnancy tests.
20. A $4.00 bottle of wine is no longer "pretty good shit."
21. You actually eat breakfast food at breakfast time.
22. "I just can't drink the way I used to" replaces "I'm never going to drink that much again."
23. 90% of the time you spend in front of a computer is for real work.
24. You drink at home to save money before going to a bar.
25. When you find out your friend is pregnant you congratulate them instead of asking "Oh shit what the hell happened?"

Bonus: 26: You read this entire list looking desperately for one sign that doesn't apply to you and can't find one to save your sorry old ass. Then you forward it to a bunch of old friends 'cause you know they'll enjoy it & do the same

and I have to speculate that God himself did make us

into corresponding shapes like puzzle pieces from the clay~iron and wine. or postal service. take your pic.

So, last night I went to this neat-but-in-the-ghetto place in Raleigh called Humble Pie. They had a great Shiraz (Richard Hamilton 2002 SGM, Colton's RP 88) as one of the wines we tasted. Yummy stuff.

Over the course of the wine tasting one of my fellow alumnae and I started talking. And it got me to think about the strange things that happen. How everything interconnects, and how the bigger picture becomes clear. Now, I'm not saying that every single thing happens for a reason. Maybe not the days where everything goes wrong (you drive off with you coffee still on your car, you stub your toe, drop all your papers, run a red light, burn the rice at dinner and then set your alarm for PM instead of AM), and maybe not the incredible ones either. But there seems, sometimes, to be a plan for all of the events that shape you as a person, as a human being.

and it's frickin' weird.

I was telling here about how I ended up here, in NC, working at my job and dating Otto and being President of the alumnae association. And it's crazy stuff! It's not that I haven't made decisions, but more that the side things are what brought me here. (came to NC because I was married, found the job at kruger because I worked at the gap, found the job because of who I worked with at the icky K place, became friends with audrey because i worked at michael's. i'd never have done that if we hadn't decided sort-of last minute to move to north carolina. i never would have been a kappa delta if i hadn't ended up going to the one school i didn't want to attend. this silly list goes on and on, and it baffles my mind.)

but it does all fit together like a puzzle. a weird, convoluted, involved and sometimes unintelligible puzzle, methinks. one that isn't square, and doesn't have a border. and someday i hope it looks very cool all modge-podged and hanging up on a wall.

seriously funny.

this is funny. go there. read it. laugh. or at least smile. i know the first page is pretty much work safe. i've decided to wait until I'm at home to read the rest. but go check it out.

i have a shirt now, and the back says "help us help you help your friends and family help humanity help the zombies." only "help the zombies" has a line through it. f-u-n-n-y

per usual.

craiglist sucks. because people buy things right out from under you. s.i.g.h.

stardust.

hi there. sterling totally gets credit for telling me about this.

you should now.
1. read stardust if you haven't already. it's so so so so so so so good. and if you have any interest in things like the princess bride, you'll love it, i bet. or hitchhiker's guide. or where the wild things are. or anything else in print, pretty much. ;) seriously though, it's very much worth the read.
2. get excited about stardust. claire danes is in it. yay!

linkity link link.

a new side of natalie...
portman that is. crazy, huh?

we might be getting this couch soon. it's three years old and it's sage green, not khaki. and seeing as how we currently have this couch, it will be an improvement. 'cause, y'know, otto is six-foot-six, and we own a loveseat. and the matching-ish chair is awful small.

i can't get too excited about it though, because craigslist stuff often gets bought by someone else. (ps, if you don't know what craigslist is check it out--very neato, methinks) but this sounds promising. it's not ideal, but it will mean that we can save more for a couch instead of trying to finance it.

i am getting really, really excited about going to new orleans in two weeks and two days. really, really, really. chris and ariel's wedding is going to be sososososososo much fun. plus it's in new orleans and we'll be going to oak alley!!! now all I have to do is find some shoes to wear...

this weekend was good. slept a lot. played texas hold 'em and drank mojitos, and lost $5 to jake. they were stiff--but much much better once the ice melted. molly didn't want much sugar. and we washed, waxed and detailed otto's ruby. it was nice to spend some time outside. oh, and heard that dirty deeds, done dirt cheap song on the radio. cracks. me. up.

sorry this isn't an exciting post. sometimes they aren't. ooh, so have a fun word...

Brobdingnagian \brob-ding-NAG-ee-uhn\, adjective:
Of extraordinary size; gigantic; enormous.

put that in your pipe and smoke it...
or use it five times today and the word will become a part of your vocab!

if you see her, please say hello to my mother. it's her birthday today (don't forget, adam!)

Friday, March 03, 2006

but tonight I'm on my way...

-ben kweller.

to--you guessed it--virginia. to paul's deli for a party and then to mathews to hang with the brothers foster. it should be fun. i'm not excited because we'll be traveling 4 of the next 5 weekends, but it should still be fun.

i had a bit of a super frightening flashback the other day. my friend charlie was telling otto and me about this cool bar in boston, ma, and it just so happened that it was bukowski's tavern, where scary too-hard-too-fast guy from last dec-feb hangs out. shudder.

double shudder.

so, weekend of travel, here i come. i'm tempted to bring some paints and paint if I get bored. perhaps I shall. knitting and crocheting are fun for the car, but not for when you're sitting around. they don't entertain me, they just keep me busy.

ooh, and if you're a girl, read the poisonwood bible. so so so good.

"why wouldn't you want to have a joke in your pocket?"

best excerpt from an article, ever.

art, much?

can you believe it?  yikes.

Wednesday, March 01, 2006

puns, puns, everywhere, but not a drop to drink.

or only one place to put 'em, whatever...

hair today, gone tomorrow?
the long and short of it.
a hair-owing experience
the follicle challenge

tonight I'm cutting my hair. Perhaps in a drastic way. Perhaps not. I just know that it needs to change.

I thought I'd look and see what they need for Locks of Love. ten inches! That's a lot folks, by anyone's standards.

but really I'm just not sure what to do. oh well.

I'm very pleased to say it's March. I'm going to celebrate St Patty's day and go to a wedding in New Orleans the next weekend--what more could I ask for? And that also means it's closer to May. I'll be in Tulsa the 17th-21st of May. Let me know if you want to get together! (PS, I'm a planner...and thanks for double-checking, Marc!)

TU-L-S-A

things I miss about Tulsa. in no particular order. (though I admit it is lunchtime, so food is on my mind)

Mazzio's Pizza
TU (and the bookstore--I need a new TU shirt or three BAD--all of mine are too ratty to wear...)
Hobby Lobby
Zio's
The grid pattern of the roads (mmm mmm mmm I love the alphabet!)
The Bead Merchant
Hair For You (the best hair person in the world works there. her name is Cheryl)
Greek Stores (there are NONE in the Triangle area. NONE. yet there are two huge state schools here with ginormous fraternities and sororites)
Bourbon Street Cafe
Big Al's
Harvard Avenue (the street, not my brother--his name is Harvey but I sometimes call him Harvard Avenue)
Brookside (the shops and the restaurants/bars)
Java Dave's
Riverside Drive, and the 21st St Bridge
The cute shops on Cherry Street
The way that it seems soooo far to go from TU to South Tulsa, when it reality it's not far at all
Sonics--they're everywhere!
A&W Root Beer
Claude's Hamburgers
Brownie's
Reasor's Grocery Stores
The Pickle Bar at Goldie's
all of the hills on the roads--like 36th St
Drug Warehouse
Not using yahoo maps on a bi-weekly basis
Utica Square
Having a piano
Zink Park
Bank of Oklahoma (way better than walk-all-over-ya wachovia)
the fancy Art Store I whose name I can't remember (triangle?)
knowing the funny names of little towns. like Wewoka or Talequah. OR Sallisaw, Henrietta, Wagoner, Catoosa--get it?
the penguins

and of course I miss my friends and family--but they aren't things, and that's why they aren't on this list.

sigh.

I will never ever ever move back to Tulsa, I'm pretty sure. (trying not to say absolutes, y'know? in my experience they get broken.) But I hope I get to visit it often so I can get my fix. I'm looking forward to May.

happy birthday sterling!

go wish him well for his big two-five. because he's the wonderfulest. take my word for it.

and now he's old too. :)

how old are you in first grade? don't you turn seven or something? Man, that means we've known each other for something like eighteen and a half years. no wonder you're on my top ten fave people list. enjoy your birthday!
